How to Survive Summer Events as a New Parent

Summer brings sunshine, barbecues, weddings, pool parties, and all kinds of get-togethers. Sounds fun, right? But for new parents, this can be their worst nightmare (ok, maybe not literally the worst). Between packing up half the house, worrying about nap times, and figuring out how to keep your baby cool and safe, summer events can feel overwhelming. And let’s be honest, dealing with well-meaning strangers who want to hold or kiss your baby when you’re already running on little sleep is enough to make anyone sweat. These tips will help you enjoy the season without losing your sanity and keep your baby protected along the way.

1. Pack the essentials

Trust me, it’s better to overpack than to find yourself stuck without something you need. Your diaper bag is your best friend in these situations. Make sure you’ve got:

  • Plenty of diapers and wipes (always pack more than you think you’ll need)

  • Portable changing mat

  • Lightweight blanket

  • Hat & baby-safe sunscreen (for babies over six months—otherwise, keep them in the shade)

  • Bottles, snacks, or breastfeeding cover

  • Extra onesies (you never know)

  • Fan or cooling cloths for hot days

And don’t forget about yourself! Bring water, snacks, and a change of clothes if needed.

2. Stick to a Schedule

Consistency matters for babies, even when life gets a little unpredictable. Try to keep nap and feeding times in mind when planning your day. Having a shaded stroller or finding a calm corner can help your baby recharge, even at the busiest summer gatherings.

3. Know When to Say No

Not every invitation needs a “yes.” If an event starts at bedtime or just feels like too much, it’s okay to skip it. Your baby’s comfort—and your sanity—matter more than pleasing everyone else.

Don’t be afraid to set boundaries with family, friends, or strangers, too. It’s perfectly okay to say, “No, thanks, we’re keeping things low-key today” or “We’re not comfortable with anyone else holding the baby right now.” You know what’s best for your family, and you don’t need to apologize for it.

4. Babywear Like a Pro

A good baby carrier is a game-changer. It keeps your hands free, helps your baby feel safe in crowded places, and is often easier than maneuvering a stroller through sand or grass. Just check your baby’s temperature every now and then to make sure they’re not getting too hot.

5. Give Yourself Grace

Things might not go as planned, and that’s okay. Your baby might cry during a wedding ceremony, or you might forget a bottle. Give yourself a break—you’re doing something brand new, and that’s pretty amazing.

Wrapping It Up

It’s okay if summer looks a little different this year. You’re figuring out a new rhythm, and that takes time. Be present, take breaks, and celebrate every small win. You’re more capable than you think, and you’ve got this.
