Sun Safety 101: How to Protect Your Baby (and Yourself) This Summer
Towels? Check. Snacks? Check. Favorite swimsuit? On. Sunglasses? Got ’em. Wait…Where’s the sunscreen?!
We’ve all been there—halfway to the beach or already setting up at the park when we realize we forgot one of the most important things. When it comes to summer fun with your baby, sun safety isn’t just a good idea; it’s essential. Baby skin is super sensitive, and even a few minutes in strong sun can do damage. Here’s your quick guide to making sure you’re both protected before the rays hit.
1.Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen!
For babies younger than six months, sunscreen isn’t recommended. Their delicate skin is much more sensitive to chemicals and can easily absorb them, which is why pediatricians advise keeping babies in the shade or covered with protective clothing instead. If you must be in the sun, use a wide-brimmed hat, lightweight clothing with a tight weave, and seek shade whenever possible.
Once your baby is older than six months, you can start using baby-safe, broad-spectrum sunscreen on all exposed skin—just be sure to avoid the eyes. Apply it generously and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
2.Protective Clothing
Since newborns should stay out of direct sun, lightweight, protective clothing is key. Look for breathable fabrics with a tight weave or a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating. Not sure how protective a fabric is? Try this trick: stretch the fabric and hold it up to the sun—the less light that passes through, the better the protection.
Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat! Choose one that shades your baby’s face, ears, and the back of their neck for full coverage. Bonus points if it has a chin strap to stay put during those windy park strolls!
3.Timing is everything
UV rays are strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. This time also happens to be when babies are most likely to get irritated from the heat. If possible, plan your outdoor adventures in the early morning or late afternoon. This way, you avoid the most intense UV rays while still enjoying some fresh air and sunshine.
4.Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is incredibly common during the summer, especially for babies. With all the excitement of outdoor activities, it’s easy to overlook how important fluids are. That’s why it’s essential to keep your baby well hydrated. For younger babies, offer breast milk or formula more often than usual. For those over six months, you can also introduce small sips of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps regulate body temperature and keeps your baby feeling comfortable and alert.
Have fun!
At the end of the day, summer is all about creating special memories with your little one. Whether you’re dipping tiny toes in the ocean, building your first sandcastle together, or just lounging under an umbrella with snacks and giggles, those moments matter. Sun safety is important, but it doesn’t have to take away from the fun—in fact, it helps you enjoy it worry-free.
