Beach Days & Baby: What to Pack, What to Skip, and What to Expect
If the thought of taking your baby to the beach feels a little… overwhelming, you’re not alone. Between naps, feedings, gear, and the general unpredictability of babies, it’s easy to wonder if it’s worth the effort. And honestly? Sometimes staying home does sound easier.
But beach days don’t have to be perfect to be memorable. With the right prep (and realistic expectations), they can actually be really special. I’ve worked with a lot of new parents over the years, and I’ve learned a few things that make the whole experience smoother—for you and your baby.
Here’s what to bring, what you can leave behind, and what to expect when your beach day includes a baby in the mix.
What to Pack (a.k.a. your beach day survival guide)
If you only remember one thing, let it be this: shade is everything. A pop-up tent or oversized umbrella is your best friend for feeding, diaper changes, or just escaping the heat—especially since babies under 6 months can’t wear sunscreen.
Yes, you heard that right—most pediatricians recommend holding off on sunscreen during those early months because a baby’s skin is still developing and is much more sensitive to the chemicals in sunscreen.
If your little one is old enough, go for a gentle, mineral-based sunscreen (apply before you leave so you’re not wrestling a slippery, sandy baby on the beach).
Swap out regular diapers for swim diapers—and pack a few extras, just in case. Then throw on a wide-brimmed sun hat and a rash guard with UPF protection, and you’re good to go (sun-safe and stress-free).
Food-wise, overpack. Bring bottles or formula, a sippy cup with water, and plenty of snacks your baby loves—and just as importantly, snacks you love. A fussy baby + a hungry, overheated parent is not a combo you want to deal with
Lay down a big blanket or beach mat for a soft, sand-friendly setup. And wipes—bring plenty. You’ll use them for everything. Pro tip: baby powder helps remove sand without leaving everyone damp and sticky
That’s it—nothing fancy, just the essentials to keep everyone cool, fed, and somewhat sand-free.
What to Skip
You don’t need everything. Promise.
Half the toy bin – One or two beach-friendly toys are more than enough. Babies are way more into the sand anyway.
Stroller – Unless you’ve got one built for sand, it’s just not worth the effort. Baby-wearing or a beach wagon is way easier.
What to Expect (so you don’t spiral)
You won’t stay long—and that’s okay.
Most babies max out after 1–2 hours. Go early, beat the heat, and leave before things unravel.
Sand will be everywhere.
In the diaper, in your car—honestly, places you didn’t know sand could reach. You’ll be finding it for days. Just embrace it and move on.
But also… there will be magic.
That moment your baby touches the ocean for the first time? The pure joy in their face when they feel the sand between their fingers? Worth it. Every time.
Final thoughts:
You don’t have to do everything right. You don’t have to pack perfectly. You just have to show up—with sunscreen, snacks, and a bit of patience.
A beach day with a baby is not a vacation. But it can be a beautiful, messy, joy-filled memory. And that’s more than enough.
